The Four Levels of Language Learning in Immerse
What Are the Four Levels in Immerse?
The Immerse Language & Culture app is built around four distinct levels of learning. Each level builds on the one before it, helping you grow from understanding basic words and phrases to talking about complex ideas and cultural values.
You’ll start at Level 1 and move forward as your skills grow. Each level generally takes longer to complete than the last. For full-time learners, Level 1 may only take a few months, while Level 4 can take a year or more.
Here’s a quick look at what to expect at each level:
Level 1: Everyday Language
In this first level, you’ll focus on understanding and using the 2,000 to 2,500 most common words, along with familiar phrases and simple sentence patterns that local community members use every day.
Your goal is to build a strong foundation in comprehension and basic communication.

Level 2: Describing the World Around You
At this stage, you’ll start forming your own sentences — asking and answering simple questions and talking about what you see in daily life. You’ll gain confidence talking about your surroundings and activities in real time.

Level 3: Telling Stories and Explaining Ideas
Level 3 is where your language skills deepen significantly. You’ll learn to:
- Use past, present, and future tenses
- Combine sentences into paragraphs
- Describe, compare, and explain situations — especially ones that have twists, complications, or solutions
- Talk about your own and others’ life experiences

Level 4: Exploring Values and Abstract Ideas
In this final level, you’ll grow into conversations that explore opinions, values, and beliefs. You’ll be able to:
- Understand and express perspectives behind behaviors
- Support your own opinions on deeper topics
- Talk about possibilities, hypotheticals, and abstract ideas
- Connect paragraphs into longer conversations and narratives
By the end of Level 4, you’ll be able to have meaningful, in-depth conversations that reflect the way people talk about life, culture, and community.
