What is Our Fluency Goal?
What level of language fluency should I aim for?
Immerse is designed for serious language learners pursuing more than just casual conversation skills. Our users are aiming for true fluency—high proficiency in both language and culture—and are building deep, meaningful relationships within their new communities. This kind of transformation doesn’t happen in 20 minutes a day.
Technically, the target for Immerse users is an objectively measured Advanced-High proficiency level, as defined by ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). This level can be verified by a trained Oral Proficiency Interviewer through Language Testing International. Immerse is built to guide you step by step toward reaching this goal.
One of the most common pitfalls among learners is setting the bar too low. Many assume they’ll never be able to communicate in a second language with the ease or sophistication they have in their first, and so they settle for what we call “market fluency.” That often means being able to order food, greet people appropriately, handle basic transactions, and carry on simple conversations—enough to get by. And while that’s a commendable achievement, it’s not the end goal.
So let us ask: What is your goal? What kind of life are you preparing for in this new language and culture?
Immerse is built to move you beyond the common plateau of “market fluency” and into the space where you can communicate with depth and authenticity. We're talking about the ability to engage as a thoughtful adult in conversations about values, fears, dreams, joys, and sorrows. Our goal is to help you reach the point where your foreignness no longer dominates the conversation—where people interact with you as a full participant in their community, not just as an outsider.
Immerse is designed to help you become both relevant (you understand how people think, live, and communicate) and respected (you can participate naturally in conversations that matter). If your goal is truly high-level, objectively measured fluency—in both language and culture—then you’ve found the right tool.
The Buck Stops with the Learner. We would love to make language and culture acquisition effortless. But no app can take away the hard work involved. What Immerse can do is give you a clear, proven path to follow. It won’t be easy—but for the motivated learner, it will be doable, and it will be efficient.
