Completing a Level 1 Language Session

Welcome to the Immerse curriculum - level 1! In this first level, you’ll focus on understanding and using the 2,000 to 2,500 most common words, along with familiar phrases and simple sentence patterns that local community members use every day.

1. Prepare Your Materials

Each session will focus on a few specific language domains—e.g., fruits and vegetables, basic verbs, or common household items.

Before your session, prepare for your session by uploading 50–60 relevant images for that day’s language domains (15-20 words per domain). During the session, get set up so that both you and your language helper can easily view the images.

2. Start with One Word

Once you are with your language helper, begin the interact process by choosing your first word, such as banana. Ask your language helper how to say, “Point to the banana” in the local language.

Use 1-2 full sentences as your standard sentence frames for all items in the session. The helper will repeat the sentence several times while you respond by tapping or pointing to the image in the app.

At first, the sentence may feel overwhelming. Avoid the urge to write it down, isolate words, or repeat aloud. Just listen and respond.

3. Add One Word at a Time

Next, choose another item, like apple.

  • Have the helper repeat, “Point to the apple,” while you respond.
  • Once familiar, ask the helper to randomly alternate between “Point to the banana” and “Point to the apple.”
  • Confirm you can consistently identify both before moving on.

4. Build Gradually

Repeat this process with each new word:

  • Introduce the word using the full sentence.
  • Hear it 8–10 times in a row.
  • Then include it in randomized review with all previously learned items.

Continue until all 50–60 items are introduced using the same predictable sentence frame(s).

5. Review and Reinforce

Throughout the session, regularly mix previously learned items into your random practice.

By the end of the 2-hour session, your goal is to understand and respond to each vocabulary item when it’s used at random in the full sentence.

6. Create a Review Recording

In the last 10 minutes, your helper should record an audio review using the sentence frames with all vocabulary items.

  • If you used two sentence frames, use the app to record the word using both sentence frames.
