Question Frames

❓ Asking and Answering Questions in Level 2: Using Question Frames

As you enter Level 2, your ability to understand and use full sentences is growing. One of the most powerful ways to build on that foundation is by learning to ask and answer questions in the local language. This skill helps you go beyond labeling objects to more deeply interacting with people and information in your environment.

A key to success at this level is learning to use question frames—predictable sentence patterns that introduce new vocabulary and structures in a clear, manageable way.

🔍 Why Focus on Questions?

Questions allow you to:

  • Clarify and confirm what you're hearing
  • Engage in real conversations
  • Understand relationships between people, objects, and actions
  • Practice grammar structures naturally (like word order, pronouns, tenses)

By focusing on simple, structured questions, you can gradually expand into more complex topics—without getting overwhelmed.

🧱 What Are Question Frames?

Question frames are short, predictable sentences that use a limited set of question words (who, what, where, when, with what, etc.) in a context you already understand.

These frames are paired with visual supports from your life routine photo sets (e.g., a woman washing clothes at the river) to keep everything grounded in familiar context.

Here are some question frames you can use:

  • Who...?
  • What...?
  • What type...?
  • What color/shape/size...?
  • When...?
  • Where...?
  • Why...?
  • Which...?
  • Which image...?
  • Whose...?
  • How...?
  • How many?
  • How much...?
  • How often...?

🎯 Tips for Effective Practice

  • Stick with one or two question types per session to avoid overload.
  • Let your helper know you want clear and consistent structure as you build familiarity.
  • If you’re struggling to understand, ask for the question to be repeated slowly and naturally—not translated word-for-word.
